Wi-Fi Site Survey

A "WiFi site survey" is a process in which the signal coverage and quality of a wireless network are analyzed at a specific location. This is done to determine the optimal placement of wireless access points, identify interference, improve overall WiFi network performance, and reduce costs.

Procedure

1. Introduction meeting

2. Needs Assessment

3. Site survey

Types of surveys

Pre-installation

  • Predictive
  • Passive
  • On-site survey

Post-installation

  • Validation
  • Remediation

Introduction Meeting:

At the onset of our collaboration, we conduct an introduction meeting to gain a thorough understanding of your specific needs and goals regarding your WiFi network. During this meeting, we will discuss the following:

  • Your current network infrastructure and any challenges you may be facing.
  • Desired coverage areas and performance levels for your WiFi network.
  • Specific applications or requirements that may impact network performance.
  • Budgetary and time-related constraints.

Needs Assessment:

Following the introduction meeting, we will conduct a comprehensive needs analysis to determine the best approach for your WiFi installation. This includes:

  • Detailed inventory of your physical spaces and layout.
  • Identification of potential sources of interference and obstacles to signal strength.
  • Analysis of user behavior and expected network load.
  • Evaluation of network security and management requirements.

The different types of surveys:

Pre-installation:

  1. Predictive survey: Using software to predict the coverage and performance of a WiFi network based on the physical layout and characteristics of the location.

  2. Passive surveys: Collecting data on existing WiFi networks and signal strengths by passively listening to wireless signals in the environment.

  3. On-site survey: Physically placing temporary access points at strategic locations to measure the actual coverage and performance levels before permanent installation takes place.

Post-installation:

  1. Validation surveys (Active): Active measurements of network performance after installation to verify compliance with the specified requirements.

  2. Remediation surveys: Identifying any issues or deficiencies after installation and proposing solutions to improve performance.
